Don't make the folder read only, otherwise you won't be able to add folders from the guest machine. This includes access to the file system, additional display hardware, etc. This will install additonal tools the guest OS needs to work in with the host system interfaces as a virtual machine. Once your VM is up and running, go to Devices menu -> Insert Guest Additions CD image menu.

One could connect the VM to the internet and tranfer files over a server back to the host, but it's way faster to tranfer them directly on the file system. Using other traditional methods that you might tranfer files over a network doesn't work, like scp or ftp. When using VM's, sometimes it's critical to share access to files between the host machine and the vm.
